Southern Highlands Arneis 2016



Arneis is named “rascal” or “little bugger” in its original home in Piedmont, Italy where it almost became extinct due to its temperamental nature.  This quite rare variety makes a fragrant and aromatic wine with intriguing and complex flavours.

This wine features perfumed aromas of pears, peaches and apple while the palate shows broad stone fruit flavours, fresh hints of citrus and a delicious lingering aftertaste of green herbs. The acidity is fresh with good textural richness on the palate.

Notes From The Winemaker: A drier than normal winter in 2015 meant budburst happened 2 weeks earlier than usual. Normally this put us at slight risk to frost but some spring rainfall helped the frost stayed away and ensured healthy growth in the vines. While it was a dry growing season, maximum temperatures were still moderate and the harvest dates for all varieties ended up falling back to the their expected times, not earlier as experienced in other grape-growing regions. The Southern Highlands always dances with danger at harvest time because of storms and autumnal rainfall which is why our vineyards are meticulously managed with extra measures such leaf plucking and careful canopy management to ensure our fruit stays healthy and clean. The Arneis was harvested on 18th March at 12.5 baume. The fruit was gently pressed in our Europress. The juice was cold-settled overnight before racking and innoculating with a specific aromatic yeast. The ferment took 10 days at cool temperatures. When finished the wine was sulfured and aged on lees in tank for 3 months to build texture and palate weight before stabilising, filtering and bottling.
